Day 9: 1.5 miles past Muir Pass to Lower Palisade Lake

July 24th
15 Miles

Today we had to take on the infamous Golden Staircase which ascends up 2000' in a very steep fashion.    I had been dreading this part of the hike but everything turned out great.   With my iPod turned up to Max and a good deal of Chocolate the Golden Staircase seemed fairly easy.      We made it to Lower Palisade lake with plenty of time to setup camp.    We were in good position for Mather Pass the next day so all was well.    Besides that today was a fairly uneventful day as Joel and I were licking our wounds from our extremely difficult day on Muir Pass on Day 8.

Joel ended up hurting his tendon.    This is his makeshift shoe for getting uphill.
